Copyright: Electronic Coursepacks

Electronic coursepacks, or E-coursepacks, are online collections of journal, magazine or newspaper articles, book excerpts and other materials that a course instructor gathers as required or supplemental reading for students.  E-coursepacks, like their paper-based counterparts, require us to follow the Copying Guidelines.

The good news is that we already have permission to link to, or copy, much of the material that is available on the public internet or through our Library databases.

Many of your course readings, particularly for scholarly journal articles, are available in UFV's electronic journals collection (or even on the public internet).

Instead of creating print coursepacks or handouts, consider making your materials available electronically.  A few benefits of doing so include:

1. No copyright clearance needed if using the Electronic Reading Lists service - we already have permission to link to, or upload, most internet and UFV-licensed materials
2. Students get 24/7 online access to their materials
3. Electronic access can save both student costs and university funds
4. Using less paper is better for our environment
5. Additional materials can be added at any time throughout the semester

The UFV Library offers a service to create Electronic Reading Lists for your courses.  You can share your E-Reading List with students via email, or upload it to your MyUFV or your course web/Blackboard site.

How do I create an E-Reading List?

1. Submit the Electronic Reading List form online.  You will need to provide the Library with complete citation information, refer to Placing Items on Reserve for details.
    
2. Library staff will create either a document with embedded links or a course reserves webpage for you.

What can I include in my E-Reading List?

With an E-Reading List, we will:

• Link to materials on the public internet (articles, videos, etc.)
• Link to online articles or e-books licensed by the Library (using persistent links)
• Upload documents for which you own the copyright * (Course Reserves webpage option only)

* In order to upload work in which you own the copyright, you must fill out the worksheet available under "E-Reserves for Instructor-Authored Materials".
