Copyright: Permissions

Seeking Permission

If your copying does not meet the Copying Guidelines or Fair Dealing Requirements, you will need to seek permission from the copyright owner to copy the material for your course.

There are two ways to obtain permission:

    1. Contact the Copyright Librarian who will obtain a license (permission) for you through the Copyright Clearance Center.  Fees will be charged to your department.

    2. Contact the copyright owner yourself to obtain permission.  Many publishers will have a Permissions Department or an online permission form that you can submit through their website.  Otherwise you will need to write the copyright owner with your request (see template below).  NOTE: Obtaining clearances for materials can take a long time (up to 6-8 weeks) so submit your requests early to be assured that your coursepack will be available on time.

Always keep a copy of any permissions you receive.

Acknowledging Permission

If permission was obtained to use a copyrighted work, include a “used with permission” statement when copying or distributing the work.  For example:

© Pearson Education, Inc. 2013. Used with permission October 30, 2013.

Remember to always cite your source, regardless of whether or not you need to request permission.
