Research Data Management

This guide provides information about Research Data Management, data management plans, and training resources.

Why Deposit Data?

The benefits of depositing data in a repository include:

  • Providing stewardship of data after a project is finished.
  • Transferring the care and support of the data to the repository
  • Persistent, continuous data citation and linking
  • Ensuring controlled access to data, as stipulated by the researcher, thereby removing the burden from the researcher
  • Ensuring files are formatted for preservation and sharing

Dataverse at UFV

UFV’s Dataverse is part of Borealis, the Canadian Dataverse Repository. The Research Offices manages UFV’s Dataverse and supports researchers with versioning, licensing and sharing of their research data.

Federated Research Data Repository

FRDR is a system for Canadian researchers to deposit and share research data and to facilitate discovery of research data in Canadian repositories using FRDR's single federated search tool. FRDR is also capable of handling very large data sets.

Other Data Repositories

Other data depositories are also available. These include discipline-specific repositories and regional, national, or institutional repositories. Some options are included below:

Orcid iD - Stay connected with your research output

ORCiD iD (Open Researcher and Contributor iD) is a persistent identification system designed to permanently connect researchers to the bibliographic work they publish throughout their lives. ORCiD is recognized by and interoperable with most scholarly institutions, funders and publishers. By using ORCiD, funding institutions can identify individual scholars quickly and accurately, and review your past publications and potential work collaborators without being confused by other scholars with similar names.

Think of ORCiD iD as an ISBN for a researcher. Having an ORCiD iD ensures that your bibliographic output will be properly connected to you regardless of:

  • changes in name
  • translation/transliteration of your name across languages
  • changes with your institution affiliations
  • relocation to another country
  • publishing in another discipline

While persistent identifications such as DOIs are created to provide permanent links to information and datasets, ORCiD ensures you receive proper attribution for both your datasets and research output.
