Generals Rules

Generative AI like Replit, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot are useful tools for cleaning up existing code, or writing code from scratch in what is known as vibe coding.

The pros:

  • Speeds up redundant tasks
  • Good at solving simple requests
  • Good at quick prototypes

The cons here are much the same as for using GenerativeAI elsewhere:

  • You are not learning how the thing works, and so cannot troubleshoot if the platform is doing the work for you
  • The code can have hallucinations, inaccuracies, or inefficiencies that are not noticeable in the short term but build up in the long term to develop quality and security concerns
  • Limited customization
  • Bad at large or complex problems
