Evaluating Sources

Although librarians have carefully compiled these sources, there is no substitute for your own evaluation. Use the following guides to help you.

Search the Library Catalogue

If you wish to know more about biography in general try searching for biography as literary form as a subject search.

Historiography—the writing of history—is a similar concept to biography. Try searching: historiography and [insert your topic here]. E.g.

  • historiography and women
  • historiography and india

Examples of subjects in the library catalogue:

Search for books, e-books, and videos
    Author

[Note: We are working to improve access to our collections and revising our subject headings to be more respectful and inclusive. Please be aware that you may see certain words or descriptions in search results or library materials which reflect the author’s attitude or that of the period in which the item was created and may now be considered offensive.]

Internet Resources

When searching for biography on the Internet try searches similar to the subject searches in the UFV Library Catalogue or in the research databases. Try your favourite search engine, Google or Google scholar, reversing the name is not strictly necessary, but try it different ways for different results, e.g.

        toni morrison biography
        morrison tony biography

Also try ‘biographical sources’ along with a discipline or area, e.g.

        biographical sources science
