Select and Collect: Library Pickup Service During COVID-19: Home

This guide describes the curbside pickup service developed by the UFV Library in response to the COVID-19 situation

Library Select and Collect Service Description

The UFV Library sites (Abbotsford and Chilliwack) remain closed due to health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we are offering Select and Collect, a curbside-like pickup service to our
primary users (students and employees) and to UFV alumni.

Pickup hours for Select and Collect are:

  • Abbotsford Library:  4 days per week (Monday through Thursday, 12PM to 4PM)
  • Chilliwack Library: 4 days per week (Monday through Thursday, 1PM to 4PM)
  • this service is NOT offered on holidays!

Please DO NOT use this service if you are feeling unwell or have reason to
believe that you have been exposed to COVID-19.

In addition to Select and Collect, we have other services. If you are not sure if
Select and Collect is the right service for your needs, check out our Requesting
Library Materials Flowchart:

How to request items?

Items can be requested by clicking on Place Hold through the UFV Library Catalogue. If you do not see an option to place a hold, that probably means that the item cannot be requested via this service. If you have questions, please contact the library via

You will need to use your UFV ID Number and Library PIN number to place a hold.

Place Hold

Please note that library staff are working limited hours in the libraries, to ensure safety. Depending on the volume of requests, there may be some delay in our response to questions or to the preparation of your order request.

Is Select and Collect Safe?

When items are returned to the library, they will be placed in quarantine for 7 days prior to being checked in, reshelved, or checked out to new users. (Do not worry, items will be back-dated to the date that you returned them!) Tests performed by the REALM Project have indicated that the virus is no longer detectable after 6 days on the following items:

1) Hardback book cover (buckram cloth)
2) Softback book cover
3) Plain paper pages inside a closed book
4) Plastic book covering (biaxially oriented polyester film)
5) DVD case.

Therefore, any items checked out to users will have been through quarantine and will have been handled by library staff who are practicing safe handling protocols (either washing hands prior to touching materials or wearing gloves and other PPE). If you want to be ultra safe, you can wait an additional 72 hours after pickup before handling your requested items. Please do not attempt to disinfect library materials in any way. If you do, you will be responsible for any damage.

Returning Items

UFV Library items can be returned to the bookdrops at both the Abbotsford and Chilliwack Libraries. Please note that we are practicing quarantine measures, so there will be a delay between drop-off and when returned items no longer show on your account. However, items will be back-dated to the date they were returned to the library.

Bookdrop locations:

  • Chilliwack -- Outside south entrance of A Building
  • Abbotsford -- Outside north entrance of G Building

Please note that, due to safety issues, items cannot be returned to staff operating the Select and Collect pickup service. However, we can make exceptions for over-sized items that will not fit in the bookdrop.

How Does Select and Collect Work?

If you no longer need the item(s) that you requested, please email to cancel your request.

How will I Pick Up My Requested Items?

Please note that you will actually have to enter a building to pick up your items. Signage and floor markings will help ensure a safe experience for library staff and users. Please comply with all signage and directions from library staff.
