EDUC 410: Community Ethnography: Indigenous Lands

Native Land Digital is a Canadian not-for-profit organization, incorporated in December 2018. Native Land Digital is Indigenous-led, with an Indigenous Executive Director and Board of Directors who oversee and direct the organization. Numerous non-Indigenous people also contribute as members of our Advisory Council. The Board of Directors govern finances, set priorities, and appoint staff members as required.

Native Land was created in 2015 by Victor Temprano, a settler hailing from Okanagan territory. You can see a biography and the old About page here to learn more about the roots of the project.

We, the Stó:lō have lived in S'ólh Téméxw, our traditional territory since time immemorial. Nearly 200 years ago, European newcomers (Xwelitem) began immigrating into and transforming our territory.

In 1864, the first Governor of British Columbia, James Douglas directed surveyors to map out reserves for Stó:lō communities throughout the Fraser Valley. In 1867, following Governor Douglas' retirement, Joseph Trutch Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works resurveyed reserves and reduced them to a small fraction of the size established by Douglas.

We are the Sq’éwlets People. We are Sqwōwich, People of the Sturgeon. This website shares our journey from ancient times to the present. Join us as we tell of our origins and personal histories, what we call our sxwōxwiyám and sqwélqwel. We live where the Harrison and Fraser Rivers of British Columbia meet.
