The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Open Education Faculty Fellows (OEFF) program will support three short-term (maximum one semester) faculty projects that will create, develop, or modify open education resources to be used in UFV courses as well as similar courses taught at other institutions. An OER Student Assistants program (administered separately - details TBA) will fund one student position to assist with each of the three OEFF projects. Proposal applications are due November 2, 2020, and the three successful applications will be announced by early December 2020.

Open Education Faculty Fellows (OEFF) program will support short-term (up to one semester) proposals for faculty to create, develop or modify open education resources and/or open pedagogy skills to be used in their courses (and in similar courses in other post-secondary institutions) and hence support student learning.

Fundable projects may include, but are not necessarily limited to, the creation of new open education textbooks/resources, the development of ancillary resources for existing resources, modification of existing open education textbooks/resources, or organizing and running a textbook sprint.

Applicants for OEFF funding must clearly show how the proposed project is expected to support, enhance, or improve student learning through the development/modification of open educational resources.  Proposals should refer, where necessary, to the literature surrounding open education to show how the projects will build on existing scholarship in this area and identify an existing need for the development of open educational resources in a particular area.

The fund is not intended to provide continuing support for projects.  OEFF funding for any one project is limited to the equivalent of one, 3 credit course (release or equivalent funding).  Please note that, an OEFF release cannot be taken in the same year as a ROSA release for the same project without permission of the AVP REGS and the applicant’s Dean.

 

Eligible applicants are those holding full or part time tenure-track or tenured teaching B faculty (Article 18) positions at UFV.

Applicants must address the combination of criteria appropriate to the creation, development, delivery and evaluation of the open education project being proposed.

 

Within the semester following the funding period, faculty shall submit a report to the program administrators via email to claire.hay@ufv.ca.  The report will include a summary of the activities planned and undertaken, and a description of the degree to which the significant goals and/or objectives of the proposal were achieved.  Faculty are also asked to comment on the OEFF process, from application to conclusion, providing feedback that can help inform future revisions to the application, adjudication, website, and/or administration of the fund.

The OEFF program is funded by a BC Campus OER Foundations Grant and the UFV Office of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic.

Additional Details

  1. Project deliverables: This proposal demonstrates a clear commitment to the creation of a tangible OE resource that can be shared within and across institutions.  This may include OE textbook chapter(s), book outline, ancillary resources for pre-existing OE textbook.  In addition, the proposal commits to the final product being openly licensed and freely available for adoption by faculty and used by students across the sector.  The applicant will work towards the final OER being hosted on the BC Open Textbook portal (or similar repository).  
  2. Educational impact: This proposal demonstrates relevance to a known open educational resource need; and, will strengthen student learning experiences.
  3. Student involvement: The proposal demonstrates how OER Student Assistants will contribute to the project.
  4. Partnerships: Collaboration with faculty at other institutions or provincial articulation committee; and/or community or industry partnerships
  5. Linkages: The proposal creates linkages and collaborations between individual faculty members; departments or schools within a faculty; or departments or schools in two or more faculties.
  6. Strategic priorities: The proposal aligns with one or more of the existing university strategic plans, such as the Education Plan, the Strategic Research Plan, the Strategic Enrollment Management Plan, Vision 2025 and/or the Institutional Learning Outcomes.

Applications will be scored and ranked according to the following criteria.  To be eligible for OEFF funding, applications must receive “yes” in Section 1 (questions 1 and 2) and, in Section 2, score a minimum of (2) in all categories.  In most circumstances, an overall score of 40/45 is required for funding.

  1. Application form: Complete a detailed project proposal using the template provided, and attach to the online application submission form.
  2. Evidence of faculty commitment: By checking the appropriate box on the online application submission form, the applicant is assuming administrative, fiscal and intellectual responsibility for the project and commits to fulfilling the objectives set out in the application.  
  3. Evidence of departmental support: The applicant’s department head or equivalent immediate supervisor should complete the appropriate section of the application and sign the form. A dean's signature is also required.
  4. Statement of external support: If relevant, all applicants must state if they anticipate any additional support (e.g., funding, volunteer, research, etc.), and whether or not they are applying for or have been approved for a scholarly activity or research option (ROSA) in the same year as the OEFF application.  An OEFF release cannot be taken in the same year as a ROSA release for the same project without permission of the AVP REGS and the applicant’s Dean.
