Great War Day - Researching Your Family's Military Roots: Great Britain & Empire

General Information

The BBC's Researching Military Records Peter Francis from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission explains how to search archives for family and military records.

Many records for UK soldiers are available at The National Archives, some service records are currently held by the Ministry of Defence. The majority of the personnel records for the First World War had been destroyed or damaged during World War II.

Access to most UK records is fee-based. To access the records you will have to visit the National Archives, pay for research or if you have a specific document in mind, order a copy.
