Permitted Uses

General Terms of Use

Most electronic resources are governed by license agreements which restrict use to the UFV community and to individuals who use the libraries' facilities. It is the responsibility of each user to ensure these products are used for individual educational or research purposes only. Systematic downloading, distributing or retaining substantial portions of information may result in loss of access to these resources for the entire UFV community.

Persistent Linking

Almost all resources allow and encourage the use of persistent links to articles. These links connect users directly to the source and may be used from on or off campus.  Detailed instructions are available.

  • Provide a full citation to the source
  • Links to licensed resources must be within secure authentication environments.

Classroom Handouts

A classroom handout may be defined as the distribution of a single copy of an individual article to students in a class for purposes of instruction.

E-Reserves

If permitted, UFV Faculty may incorporate licensed materials in a secure, password protected electronic reserve environment.  Access must be restricted to current UFV students or employees.

  • Provide a full citation to the source.

If inclusion in an Electronic Reserve environment is not permitted, consider the use of persistent linking.

Coursepacks

A coursepack may be defined as a collection or compilation of materials (eg. books chapters, journal articles) assembled by a faculty member for use by its students in a class for the purposes of instruction.

If a coursepack is not permitted, consider the use of persistent linking.

Blackboard Learning Management System

If permitted, UFV Faculty may incorporate licensed materials in a secure, password protected electronic course environment, such as Blackboard.  Access must be restricted to current UFV students or employees.

  • Provide a full citation to the source.

If inclusion in Blackboard is not permitted, consider the use of persistent linking.

Interlibrary Loan

If permitted, articles or chapters from this database may be supplied to other libraries for individual research and study but not for commercial use, within current Copyright guidelines. Most databases allow transmission of both paper and electronic copies of articles.

  • Provide a full citation to the source.

Examples of acceptable and unacceptable use

Examples of acceptable uses of resources and data include:

  • Search, view, retrieve and display licensed data
  • Save or print limited amounts or parts of the data for personal research use
  • Uses allowed under copyright (may be further restricted by license terms)

Examples of unacceptable uses of resources and data include:

  • Commercial use (for the purpose of monetary reward by means of sale, resale, loan, transfer)
  • Redistribution of data to unauthorized users, e.g. via email, a web site, or a database
  • Republication of the resource or the data
  • Providing access to unauthorized users, e.g. those outside the UFV community
  • Automated or excessive data crawling within resources
  • Automated or systematic downloading, mining, or harvesting of data
  • Removal or alteration of a copyright holder's information

Authorized users who breach license agreements may lose access to resources and may face disciplinary action.  Misuse may even result in loss of access for the entire UFV community.
