Legal Citation Style

This citation style guide is meant to help students looking to cite legal resources such as acts and case law. In-text and narrative examples given use APA formatting. This guide will be useful for criminology students in particular.

Overview

The McGill Guide does include some basic instructions for citing various Indigenous legal documents. Remember - these tips and examples were created by a librarian, please check with your instructor, assignment instructions, and/or official style guides for specific details. Indigenous Treaties & Land Claims - Reference List

General Format = Title, date, pinpoint, online: title of website <url> [archived URL] [Treaty short form].

Citing Treaties in-text using APA

For legal citations, the APA 7th edition states "give enough information in the in-text citation to enable readers to locate the entry in the reference list" and that "most in-text citations consist of the title and year" (p. 357). Check with your instructor if they have specific instructions.

Parenthetical citation: (Treaty Title, Year) 

e.g. ... (Treaty No. 10, 1907)

Narrative citation: Treaty Title (Year)

Indigenous Constitutions - Reference List

The McGill Guide states "When referring to Indigenous constitutional documents, include basic, critical information, so that readers can track the source" (p. E-27).

Pinpoint

When citing pinpoints for statutes use s (section) or ss (plural). Note: this is a general rule for statutes and not specific for Indigenous Constitutions.

Citing Constitutions in-text using APA

For legal citations, the APA 7th edition states "give enough information in the in-text citation to enable readers to locate the entry in the reference list" and that "most in-text citations consist of the title and year" (p. 357). In the APA 7th edition, examples given for in-text citations only include articles and titles; the examples below have been modified to fit with the more general instructions. Check with your instructor if they have specific instructions.

Parenthetical citation: (Constitution Title, year)

Indigenous Statutes - Reference List
