War in Ukraine

This topic guide is intended to provide an overview of the events leading up to Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. This guide may be useful to students in a variety of disciplines.

Overview

Ukraine has a long and fascinating history with political periods of autonomy and absorption by other empires. Modern day Ukraine declared independence in 1991 and is now the 2nd largest country in Europe by geographical area (Gale, 2022). The population was roughly 41 million people as of Feb. 1st, 2022 (State Statistics Services of Ukraine, 2022). The country's entangled history with Russia has had a profound impact on the culture and politics in the region. One clear example in Ukrainian culture is language which has gone from seven commonly spoken languages before World War II to present day where only "two main languages [are] fighting for public space (Ukrainian and Russian)" (Arel, 2017-2018). The sources below focus Ukraine's history up to the 2014 annexation of Crimea.
