How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly towards them by Verna Myers [TEDTalk]

What is BIPOC?

BIPOC is an acronym that stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour.

This is a term that became popular in the United States in 2013 and slowly became used in Canada. However, many in the various communities of Black, Indigenous and those who are called People of Colour (Asian, Indian, South American etc.) find the term offensive. The term is offensive as it groups these individual, unique communities together under one heading. It implies interchangeability from one minority to another. Also, it doesn't recognize the individual histories and way racialized people experience race and racism.

We will not use that term at our library as we recognize the individual histories, experiences, and communities of racialized people. Instead we will use Black, Indigenous and People of Colour. If we are talking about a specific group of people, we will mention them (Asian).

We have left some website resources below that do mention BIPOC as they were created by members of racialized communities.
