Gender Equity is the fairness of treatment for women and men, according to their individual needs. This may include "equal treatment or treatment that is different but which is considered equivalent in terms of rights, benefits, obligations and opportunities" (ILO, p.92).
Gender Equality refers to the "enjoyment of equal rights, opportunities, and treatment by men, women, boys, and girls in all spheres of life" (ILO, p.91). Gender equality does not mean all women and men have to become the same, but that they are free to develop their own personal abilities, needs, behaviour, and life choices without the limitations of stereotypes, prejudices about gender roles or the characteristics of men and women.
