Open Access Publishing: Introduction

This guide has been developed as a general overview of the resources, information, and issues pertaining to Open Access (OA) publishing. Herein, OA information will generally refer to aspects of research and publishing. Overlap does, of course, exist with Open Educational Resources (OER) topics. For OER-specific information, please see our guide:

This guide is primarily intended as a resource for UFV faculty and staff, and is not to be considered a comprehensive treatment of OA topics, but rather a starting point from which you can begin or continue your research according to your information needs. In each tab, you will be directed to a topic-specific bibliography in the Readings section.

Open Access Defined

The Open Knowledge Foundation sets forth the definition that a  "piece of data or content is open if anyone is free to use, reuse, and redistribute it — subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and/or share-alike.”

The definition is intended to clarify the concept of openness and offer principles for assessment and judgement about what is or is not "open".

Budapest Open Access Initiative

Considered by many to be the first articulated definition of "Open Access", the Budapest Open Access Initiative statement calls for the removal of access barriers to published , peer-reviewed scholarly research in order to "accelerate research, enrich education, share the learning of the rich with the poor and the poor with the rich, make this literature as useful as it can be, and lay the foundation for uniting humanity in a common intellectual conversation and quest for knowledge."
