Professor Stephen Gorard explains that researchers should start projects by defining what they want to learn, then choosing research methods to best match the question. He says that too few academics have good research design skills, and he discusses the relationship between research and theory.

Dr. Pat Bazeley discusses mixed methods research and how she started using it. Mixed methods research integrates different methods to achieve something that would have been impossible with just one method. Bazeley started using mixed methods because she was doing a lot of evaluation work, and the complexity of social issues required multiple methods.
