Streaming Video Collections

Through its streaming video collections, the library provides access to thousands of videos online. This guide offers instructions on how to provide access to these collections for teaching purposes.

In order to activate special features, including creating playlists and sharing them with students, you need to register for an account. 

Click/tap the menu icon at the top right-hand side of Can-Core’s web page to open up a list of links with tools. 
Click/tap My Account

If you already have an existing account, you need to log out of the general account in order to sign into your own.

Once you’ve logged out of the library’s general account, a new sign-in page will open (please see screen capture below).

To find a reusable link (permalink) to a video from these collections:

  • Search for videos using the search box at the top-right of the web page. 
  • From the list of results, click/tap a video's Title to view its details page.
  • Copy the text in the SEGMENT URL box to your clipboard:
  • Using your favourite web editor to create a link on your web page, paste in the Permalink text as the URL.

Note: Please keep in mind that the permanent links for Can-Core’s videos require every individual who has the link to have already created a personal account with Can-Core. At this point, Can-Core has yet to set up a system where students can sign in with their UFV credentials. Therefore, it is easiest to create a list and include the access key in order to share Can-Core video links with students. Please see the tab Share Playlist.

 To retrieve the embed code for a video from these collections:

  • Search for videos using the search box at the top-right of the web page. 
  • From the list of results, click/tap a video's Title to view its details page.
  • Under the video, click/tap the Show Embed Code link, and the embed code will appear below.

  • Click/tap Copy to clipboard (at the top right of the embed code box) and paste the embed code into the HTML or source code of your web page.

 

To add a film to your playlist:

  • Create or sign in to your Can-Core Academic Video account by clicking/tapping the menu bar.
    • Create a new account, or:
    • Log out of the library’s general account and sign in with your own account.
  • Search for videos using the search box at the top right of the web page. 
  • From the list of results, click/tap a video's Title to view its details page.
  • On the top of the screen, to the right of the video’s title, click/tap Add to ‘My Lists.’
  • In the new window, under SELECT A LIST, use the drop-down menu to choose an existing playlist that you created earlier. If you don’t already have a list, enter a descriptive name under CREATE A NEW LIST to make a new playlist. 
  • Click/tap Save to add the title to a playlist. 

To share a playlist:

  • Create or sign into your Can-Core Academic Video account by clicking/tapping the menu icon at the top right-hand corner of the website.
    • Log out of the library’s general account and sign in with your own account.
  • In the list of menus at the top right, click/tap My Account

Your list(s) is displayed under My Lists.
Click/tap the link to the list in question to reveal all the video titles in question.

  • You should now see a list of videos in your Playlist. The Permanent link for your playlist is on top of the video list.
  • You will also see an access code next to the permanent link to the playlist.
  • In order for students to view the playlist, copy the permanent link and paste it into your Blackboard course. You will also need to copy the access code and include it with the permanent link. This special access code is required for students to watch the videos. Students must first sign into Can-Core with their UFV credentials, then use the access code to watch the playlist.

To view a transcript of the video:

  • Search for videos using the search box at the top right of the web page. 
  • From the list of results, click/tap a video's Title to view its details page.
  • Clicking/tapping the Interactive Transcript link to the bottom right of the video will load the transcript next to the video.
  • You can also view a PDF version of the video transcript by clicking/tapping Transcript (PDF).
