Streaming Video Collections

Through its streaming video collections, the library provides access to thousands of videos online. This guide offers instructions on how to provide access to these collections for teaching purposes.

How-to Instructions

To find a reusable link (permalink) to a video from these collections:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top right of the web page.
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to enter full-screen mode. Note that the video will start playing immediately. Use the playback controls below the video to stop or pause playback, if you wish.
  3. Choose Share from the menu above the video.
  4. At bottom of the screen, you'll see two options. Click Copy Permalink to copy the video's URL to the clipboard:

  5. Using your favourite web editor to create a link on your web page, paste in the Permalink text as the URL.

To find the embed code for a video from these collections:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top right of the web page.
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to enter full-screen mode. Note that the video will start playing immediately. Use the playback controls below the video to stop or pause playback, if you wish.
  3. Choose Share from menu above the video.
  4. At bottom of the screen, you'll see two options. Click Copy Embed Code to copy the code to the clipboard:

  5. Paste the embed code into the HTML or source of your web page.

If you want to focus only on part of a video, you can create a clip that you can then share:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top right of the web page.
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to enter full-screen mode. Note that the video will start playing immediately. Use the playback controls below the video to stop or pause playback, if you wish.
  3. Choose Clips from the menu above the video.
  4. You may be prompted at this point to log in (or create) an account. If you have already created an account with another Proquest database, you can use it here. If you are not sure, you can try creating an account using your UFV email address - if the account already exists, they'll let you know.
  5. Click on Create a new clip (button located in the margin to the right of the video).
  6. Type a descriptive name for the clip in the Clip title box.
  7. Use the slider bar or fill in the start and stop times to identify the segment.
  8. From the drop down box showing "Only visible to you," be sure to select Public (Visible to everyone) or Institutional (Visible within your institution). This will allow you to share the clip within your Blackboard course.

  9. Click on the Save changes button.

Your list of saved clips for this video will be displayed in the margin to the right of your video.

To share a video clip:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top right of the web page
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to enter full-screen mode. Note that the video will start playing immediately. Use the playback controls below the video to stop or pause playback, if you wish.
  3. Choose Clips from the menu above the video.
  4. The list of clips created for this video will appear in the margin to the right of the video. You can play the clip by clicking on it.
  5. Click on the menu (3 vertical dots) next to the clip's title and select Share:

  6. You should see two options displayed below the video:
    • Copy Permalink: click on this button this to create a link to the video clip in your Blackboard course.
    • Copy Embed Code: click on this button to embed the video clip in your Blackboard course.

To view a transcript of the video:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top right of the screen.
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to enter full-screen mode. Note that the video will start playing immediately. Use the playback controls below the video to stop or pause playback, if you wish.
  3. Choose Transcript from the menu above the video. The transcript text will appear in the margin to the right of the video:

The text of the transcript will advance synchronously with the video. Note that the transcript is both searchable and browseable; clicking on any section of the transcript will allow you to jump to the related section of the video.

To find a formatted bibliographic citation for a video from these collections:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top right of the web page.
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to enter full-screen mode. Note that the video will start playing immediately. Use the playback controls below the video to stop or pause playback, if you wish.
  3. Choose Cite from the menu above the video.
  4. In the margin to the right of the video, you can use the pull-down menu to choose a citation style; available styles are MLA8, APA, Chicago A and Chicago B. If you want to set a default style, check the box next to "Remember selected style.

  5. To copy the citation to your clipboard, click on the Copy Citation button.

Note: always proofread citations before sharing them; these are machine-generated citations, and they are only as good as the data they draw upon.
