Streaming Video Collections

Through its streaming video collections, the library provides access to thousands of videos online. This guide offers instructions on how to provide access to these collections for teaching purposes.

How-to Instructions

To find a reusable link (permalink) to a video from these collections:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top of the web page.
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to view the details page.
  3. Choose Share from the list of tools below the video.
  4. Below the video details, you'll see a new information panel. Make sure the Share tab is active.
  5. Copy the link in the Share link box to the clipboard:

  6. Using your favourite web editor to create a link on your web page, paste in the Permalink text as the URL.

To find the embed code for a video from these collections:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top of the web page.
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to view the details page.
  3. Choose Share from the list of tools below the video.
  4. Below the video details, you'll see a new information panel. Make sure the Embed tab is active.
  5. Copy the code in the Embed this video box to the clipboard:

  6. Click on Options to change the default viewer size.
  7. Paste the embed code into the HTML or source of your web page.

To create a playlist of videos:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top right of the web page.
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to view the details page.
  3. Choose Create Clip/Playlist from the list of tools below the video.
  4. You may be prompted at this point to log in (or create) an account.
  5. Below the video details, you'll see a new information panel. You should see a list of existing playlists. Click Add video to the appropriate playlist.
  6. If the playlist you want doesn't already exist, you will need to create it first by typing a name in the Create new playlist box and clicking on the Create button.

To save a portion of a video:

  1. Click on the Log In button (top right of web page) to sign in to your Kanopy profile. You should see your first name now in that position on the screen.
  2. Choose Dashboard from the drop-down list attached to your name.
  3. Click on the My Playlists tab to see a list of playlists available.
  4. Click on the Edit button for the playlist you wish to edit.

  5. Click on the Edit button for the video from which you want to create a clip.
  6. Fill in the fields for title, description (optional), and start/stop times. There are two ways to indicate start and stop times:
    • Type a time into the Start Time or Stop Time field in the format hh:mm:ss (the format is important)
    • Start playing the video, and click on the Capture button next to the Start Time or Stop Time field when the video reaches the point where you want the clip to start or stop. You can use the video controls to fast forward or backward through the video as needed.

  7. Click on the Save Clip button.

To link to or embed a playlist you have created:

  1. If you are not already logged in to your Kanopy account, click on the Log In button (top right of web page) to sign in to your Kanopy profile. You should see your first name now in that position on the screen.
  2. Choose Dashboard from the drop-down list attached to your name.
  3. Click on the My Playlists tab to see a list of playlists available.
  4. Click on the Share/Embed button next to the playlist you want to link to or embed.

  5. Choose one (or both) of the following:
    • To create a link to the playlist, copy the link in the Share link box to the clipboard.
    • To embed the playlist in your course site, copy the code in the Embed this video box to the clipboard.

To view the transcript of a video:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top of the web page.
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to view the details page.
  3. Choose More... from the list of tools below the video.
  4. Select Transcript from the list of options.

  5. The transcript will appear below the list of video tools, which may make it difficult to see both the transcript and the video at the same time. To view the video next to the transcript, click on the "picture-in-picture" icon in the video playback controls.

  6. The transcript will advance synchronously with the video, with highlighted text corresponding to the location in the video.

To find a formatted bibliographic citation for a video from these collections:

  1. Search for videos using the search box at the top of the web page.
  2. From the list of results, click on a video's Title to view the details page.
  3. Choose More... from the list of tools below the video.
  4. Select Citation Tool from the list of options.

  5. A formatted citation in one of four bibliographic styles - APA, MLA, Chicago, and Harvard - will be provided in a box below the video tools. Click on the appropriate tab to see a citation in that style.

  6. Click on the Copy text button to copy the citation into your clipboard, then paste it into your document or web page. Note that it may be necessary to edit the citation to conform the bibliographic style. In the example shown here, the "author" (Stephen Madigan) is missing from the citation.
